Why Do People Hate Vapers?
I want to start this by saying I do not vape, I have no plans to vape, and I personally hate vapers because like cigarettes or marijuana, or hookah – smoke and vapor irritates me. However I can confidently say this is likely not true of the majority of the population, but the majority of the population (who don’t vape) really dislike vapers.
Now I could chalk this up to a pure hatred of hipsters, and that the same people who see bearded men with man buns, or chicks with thick glasses, flannel, and blue hair will just see them vaping and assume it’s all part of the problem. Why though does the vaping come out as the thing to hate, or in the case of the DNC – something to outright ban.
For decades we were totally cool with cigarettes, and this doesn’t even have the downside of carcinogens in second hand smoke. People also have a hatred of weed culture which can be just as obnoxious, but the general sentiment towards that is waxing. (Likely a result of older people using it to relax)
It’s also not like people hate the other things vaping and hipster culture has brought with the same level of passion (aside from general gentrification) so what is the source of the distaste.
Clearly there’s only one reason. Because it’s electronic.
These e-cigarettes represent something to the older generation – that even something as comforting as the humble cigarette has moved on technologically. Combine that with the laws that have been taking cigarettes out of nearly any public space bit-by-bit (pun intended) and it’s a hatred because they’ve realized they would need to adapt.
As for younger people it reminds them more of seeing a senator on twitter. Even if it’s packaged in a new form – it’s a stupid thing to waste money on, and the decades of lung cancer in health class videos have totally removed the cool factor that could have existed. Combine that with nostalgia-factoring and it’s easy to see why we can glorify Don Draper smoking, but look at e-cigs as the worst.
Because that’s the secret, we hate vaping because media has made us long for the vision of a past that doesn’t exist.
Anyway, I’m sorry, but that just happens to be how I feel about it. What do you think?
