GLENNS RAGE CORNER NUMBER EIGHT DOES NOT EQUAL D. OR RAPE.
That’s right, if you type that out, it spells “8==D.” Today we tackle the issue of rape. How, you ask? In the form of a dickwolf.
Let’s get down to the basic facts. If you haven’t seen the comic, here it is (and it’s probably nsfw.) The point of the joke is that, if you were to take a gamer’s attitude in an MMORPG and put it into context from the character’s perspective, the fact that you don’t save all of the slaves but just an arbitrary number is as twisted as the situation itself.
Yes, kids, someone used rape to describe the devastating importance of freeing all the slaves for the sake of their safety and sanity. However, some people apparently cannot tolerate the use of rape in any context, even if it’s describing how horrible a situation is. I’m not giving you the whole details of what happened, if you want to see that, read it yourself here.
I’m going to say the following things about this entire situation, since apparently nobody else takes the time to sit and think out their rants.
Point number one – Rape isn’t funny (but George Carlin came closest to making it funny.)
While I know one of my favorite comedians happened to prove this point wrong, we can all gladly agree that George Carlin was the only person I can think of that could make the issue even remotely funny. Rape’s a horrible, violent act committed unto others that leaves people physically, mentally and emotionally damaged for any period of time from a few months to years or a lifetime. No one whom is credible on either side of the argument has argued this. Moving on.
Point number two – The main point of the joke wasn’t promoting the act of raping anyone.
If you break down the comic, the humor actually lies in the preposterous attitude given by “the hero,” whom is solely wrapped-up in his own goals that he has no compassion or empathy for anything outside of his own objectives. Given the circumstance that some of the fourth-wall comments and the character designs made in the comic suggest that this is in an RPG, they’re suggesting how it’s ludicrous to only save a handful of people whom are oppressed.
To put it into a real-world, time-appropriate analogy, how do you think we would all feel about only five people being free from Mubarak’s reign? Now replace the comment of rape with being ruled by Mubarak, you have a humorous, political cartoon that uses the exact same joke. That means the joke was in the reaction of the “Hero,” not the act of rape.
Point number three – The only reason the dickwolves shirt is a big deal is because you’re overreacting to the concept of a dickwolf.
Here’s a link to where the picture of the shirt being sold is. Now that you know what the story of a dickwolf is, you could question whether or not it means it’s condoning rape. Truth be told, it can go either way. To those who know the joke, they could think about how it’s a throw-back reference to that particular comic strip. People who don’t know what it is will either think it’s stupid and immature, or… stupid and immature (but hey, the phrase “dickwolf” is right up there with “Ass-Goblin,” “Dick-knob” and “Cockmongler” in both the sense of immaturity and related humor.)
If you want to get offended over an imaginary monster that condones rape and the act of raping women, boycott Japan for their abundant use of tentacle monsters in hentai to bypass their censorship laws. They have pictures, manga, and videos all about tentacle rape, and someone even made a soda. The soda even suggests a schoolgirl getting assaulted by a set of tentacles. I didn’t hear about Kirbybits or any of the rest of these crusaders making a scene or marching up to congress about any of this…
But Glenn, what about the fact that dickwolves and the dickwolves shirt are a prominent example of the sexual objectification of women in the gaming community?
Are you kidding me? Conventions, conferences, trade shows, advertisements on TV, magazines, and websites for video games have been using sex as a motivation to pay attention to their message and buy their products for well over a decade through various means. Hey I know, here’s three of the many ways they’ve done it:
- “Booth babes” and “promotional babes.”
- Advertising in magazines aimed for male gamers between 12 and 35. (Like this advertisement for Gex, circa 1998 in various magazines such as GamePro.)

- Making female characters “sexier” in video games (Nope, they’ve never done that… wait.)

Do dickwolves really objectify, hyper-sexualize and potentially segregate the female gamer demographic like all of this? I don’t think so.
But don’t think the gaming industry is the only place that does this, kids, because it’s all around you. Go outside and look at billboards, look in a magazine, watch TV, that’s what advertising does– sells you anything through the means of fear or arousal. Now go donate to Nerdfit, or we’ll (consensually) fuck you off of a cliff.
A side-note to all of you who believe rape objectifies only women, are you saying men can’t be raped? If so, isn’t that an inaccurate double-standard in itself? Regardless of your last answer, you’re just as bad as what you’re crusading against and should stop talking.
So here’s my conclusion, for all of you who don’t read because reading is too much effort for your tiny, little heads:
- The joke from that Penny Arcade comic strip was about how horrible it is to be self-centered and only motivated extrinsically.
- Yes, everyone agrees, rape is a terrible, terrible thing.
- The joke wasn’t condoning rape of any gender.
- Neither does the dickwolves shirt, although I still wouldn’t be caught dead in it.
- You all need to learn to pick and choose your battles… this wasn’t it.
- Shut. Up. About. It. I want to enjoy my PAX East without people arguing about a fictitious creature. It’s pointless, does nothing but create more problems for everyone involved, and you’re all still idiots.
- For those of you whom took that last statement and thought “OMG HE’S SAYING DON’T REPORT BEING RAPED!” … Punch yourself really, really hard in the face since I can’t be there to do that. You should always take a stand for yourself in a situation like that, even though it’s incredibly difficult to do so. You should also develop your reading comprehension.
With that being said, I’ll see you at PAX East. Feel free to (respectfully) agree or disagree with what I just wrote here, but I’m officially done with this issue (barring the incredibly unlikely possibility someone asks me to discuss this for a large audience.) Hopefully, all of you are done, as well.

“A side-note to all of you who believe rape objectifies only women, are you saying men can’t be raped?” What makes the objectors even more laughable is that the original rape victim in the comic WAS MALE.
Wow, I was expecting more rage and use of the profanity. Anyway, I can see where you’re coming from.
IMHO, the original comic was pretty harmless, and I think some people overrreacted to it. Understandably, the PA guys reacted to the overreaction with a sarcastic comic strip, because no one likes being called a rape apologist. I think the T-shirt was maybe in questionable taste at the time they started selling it, because by then it’s starting to seem less like responding to some people’s attacks. But now? It seems like the dickwolf shirt has been appropriated by assholes who have nothing better to do than troll critics of PA.
Nothing says ‘rape culture’ like telling feminists to shut up so you can enjoy your video game convention!
Honestly, it’s hilarious to see everyone who is “officially done” asking everyone to quiet down about this subject so we dudes can go back to pretending we’re mature, respectable men instead of sexist 12-year-olds.
Do you believe that Glenn is perpetuating, much less encouraging violent acts against women because he feels that perhaps someone has blown this situation a bit out of proportion?
I believe this rant was directed at those who have failed to even attempt to interpret the original comic and just jumped on the bandwagon of “I heard them PA guys encourage rape, heres a shirt to prove it.” Not at feminists (which none of us “dudes” here mentioned other than yourself.)
I will be at PAX East supporting a convention which allows gamers to come together and celebrate the medium that we have come to enjoy. If people want to boycott it because they honestly believe that the convention somehow encourages people to go out and rape to their hearts content, then thats their prerogative.
You may be an immature, sexist pre-teen who is only pretending to be a respectable man. That description doesn’t apply to all male gamers everywhere, and you deserve to be thoroughly castigated for trying to perpetuate that stereotype.
Further, the *theory* of “rape culture” is on shaky ground as it is, what with there being so many different viewpoints on what it entails, how it might be perpetuated, who it affects, etc., not to mention the fact that it is a relatively new, poorly supported sociological theory in the soft sciences. We’re not talking about the theory of Gravity here, we’re talking about a sub-theory of Feminist theory that has such fluid interpretation that at its worst, it equates to vague assertions that basically everything all men do everywhere that inconveniences certain feminists makes all men into “rape apologists”. For you to suggest that reasonable people who want to get on with their lives after witnessing an absolute trainwreck of a nontroversy over the past few months are perpetuating “rape culture” is asinine.
For all the talk of Gabe and Tycho’s responses to this issue being insensitive, there has been some zealous effort put into ignoring and even completely denying the remote (read: very real) possibility that Gabe and Tycho were being bullied by Internet trolls from the very moment they posted the “The Sixth Slave” comic strip. They’ve been attacked by bullying Internet trolls before, and the “blow them off with a sarcastic response that shows them and everyone else just how ridiculous their claims are” methodology has always worked before. The sad thing is that in this specific case, the bullies attacking Gabe and Tycho get to hide behind a big old shield (which they did) by saying “we’re rape survivors, by disagreeing with us you’re persecuting rape victims!” And it worked. Half the goddamned Internet threw a hissy fit and descended on Gabe and Tycho to extract vengeance for those guys standing up to bullies.
Now we’re at a point where some of these groups who jumped on the “crucify Gabe and Tycho” bandwagon have gotten apology and gracious gesture after apology and gracious gesture, and nothing the guys from Penny Arcade do seems to be good enough. Enough is enough – the spate is over, just let it die already. The individuals still demanding more humility and seeking to extort more gestures of good will and even specific sums of money before “granting” forgiveness need to realize that they are swiftly becoming the villains of this story.
Jay,
wat.

Erik
It was just some blogger at Shakesville and her followers that got riled up over the actual comic or the word rape, and accused PA of causing rape, the rest of the more reasonable feminists rallied because they heard PA stood up for themselves against a feminist.
Basically Shakesville sent PA a big “fuck you” that didn’t represent most feminists, PA replied with another “fuck you” and Shakesville then used it out of context to rally all feminists.
Logic and reason is wasted on Shakesville. It’s a place for the kind of feminists who believe that a 12 year old yelling rape into his xbox when he wins a match is apologizing for rape and will cause a judge in a rape case to laugh and dismiss all charges on the grounds that rape isn’t serious. This is the logic they use to link PA to rape. They don’t really know how the justice system works.
But if I were to embrace the “don’t trivialize rape” idea, I’d have to accuse so many of these feminists of the crime because they use the goddamn word as a sword and shield against anything, I’ve said rape more in this post than I normally would in a year, but this is common procedure for feminists. Hell anyone caught disagreeing with them gets called a rape apologist, regardless of their feelings on rape.
Also I’m a rapeopoligist, I study rape, ask me anything.
Well written. The joke was only tangentially about rape, and the person who blew it out of proportion did so for her own ends.
A much bigger fish that I’d like to see fried is the kind of talk that goes on in Xbox Live and various others – using “rape” and “faggot” about as much as a reasonable person would use “is” and “the.”
Look forward to this Thursday’s Demagogue Corner then; while it’s not about exactly that, I do mention that there are legitimate issues that the people griping about PA could be talking about instead.
Isn’t the ringleader of all this shit a ham-beast STRIPPER anyways?
That would be like me promoting world peace, or sobriety, or abstinence…
I wouldn’t say there’s any one “ringleader”; the whole buzz is a bunch of feminist blogs jumping at the chance to generate a shitload of page views by commenting on an insanely popular website’s doings. But yes, one of the more noted ones is a CR12 Ham Elemental who dances burlesque. But that’s different, because she said it’s different, and if you disagree you’re clearly just trying to increase the oppressive power of the sexist patriarchy.
